Before you sign up to do a speed reading course with someone, take some time to think very seriously about what you really mean when you say you want to read faster, because there are three different levels that your reading speed can be increased.
- The first level is speeding up the input of data - this means increasing the speed you read the words. There are a number of physical and mental techniques that can speed up the way you read words. One physical technique is learning to use your eyes more efficiently, so you read only the words you need to read, in the order that you need to read them. Other techniques involve such skills as learning to read ideas rather than individual words.
- The second level is speeding up the input of information - this means increasing the speed at which you comprehend sentences and paragraphs. Once you speed up the input of words into your mind, you must also increase the speed you comprehend those words. Remember that "read" really means "read and understand", so reading words faster than you can comprehend them is a total
waste of time.
- And the third level is speeding up the generation of knowledge - this involves both increasing the speed that you comprehend things on deeper levels, and developing your ability to process complex information. To do this you need to be able to process the information in a
sophisticated manner. Speeding up your reading on this level means increasing the speed at which you analyse the information in your mind, so that you can arrange it, categorise it, assess it and so on.
If you think this is complicated you are right, but don't be daunted, it is not hard to read faster.
You can make substantial improvements in your reading and comprehension speed in just a few lessons. To keep the course directly relevant to you, we use your books and materials when teaching you
the strategies to speed up your reading. Because the techniques we teach you are easier to do than your old techniques, once you have mastered them, you won't want to go back to your old methods again. It's like crawling and walking, once you've learned how to walk, it's easier to move around, so you don't gradually slip back into crawling.
