| The first step towards demolishing the mountain of paper next to your desk is to sort it into smaller piles, each of which contains material requiring the same level of understanding, and so the same reading techniques. Then set aside specific times to deal with each pile. If your office is quieter first thing in the morning you may find it better to use that time to read the material which requires high concentration. It might be better to save opening your mail until a bit later in the day when the office is busier because distractions don't matter so much with this type of reading.
One of the main reasons why people have difficulty keeping up with their reading is that they use the same reading strategy for every piece of material they read. For many people, it is the only reading strategy they've got because it is the only one that they were taught at school.
If you don't have a range of specific strategies to deal with each type of reading material then make an appointment for a few lessons and we will teach you the strategies you don't know.
If you are an employer or manager, you can increase the productivity of your staff by organising a reading training course for them. You will save the cost of the lessons within a few months because of the increased efficiency due to the improvement in communication within your
organisation. You will also have a happier, less stressed workforce. And what's more, your staff may even start reading your memos more carefully.
