Reading

If You Read Slowly, Find Long Words Difficult, or You Are a Poor Speller
There are four main skills which need to be learned to become a good basic reader. Failure to master just one of these skills can lead to reading and spelling problems. Failure to master a few of them is usually labeled dyslexia. (see below)

The 4 major skills that you need to learn to become good at reading and spelling words are:

  • Firstly, you need to understand the nature of the code which connects the sounds of English to the letters in the alphabet. The main parts of this code need to be practised to an automatic level
  • .
  • Next, you need to learn how to read syllables, quickly and accurately.
  • Thirdly, you need to learn how to use your visual short-term memory, so you can read fluently.
  • Finally, you need to develop your auditory short-term memory skills, so that you can be sure that you are reading accurately.

There is nothing magic about learning to read well - it is a very simple and straightforward process- when you learn the four skills just outlined, your problems with reading words will go away. You will then be able to enjoy reading and start picking up some advanced reading skills. You may even decide to return to formal education, or take on a more challenging job.

If you or someone you know has difficulty reading words fluently then book in for a diagnostic assessment, so you can find out exactly what is causing the problem. It only takes about 16 to 20 weeks of training and practice to teach all the basic reading skills - you are required to do about 1 hour of work per day over that period. The work is not difficult, and progress is fast, provided that you do the one hour practice every day.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a word used to describe a person who is confused about reading and spelling. The symptoms include such things as reversing letters, difficulty reading longer words, and missing out words or letters. Despite what many people think, dyslexia is not a disease - it is essentially a description of someone who has not learned to read well, yet. Yes, we mean that - yet! Dyslexia can be fixed. Relatively easily.
