| Basic comprehension skills are needed to read newspapers, magazines, fairly simple novels, and straight forward non-fiction material. A better term for "basic comprehension" is "reading ideas", because even though we write in words, we don't think, or even talk in words - we think and talk in IDEAS. This is the essence of comprehension - to be able to get ideas out of the words. Just, to, highlight, my, point, try, reading, like, this, in, words, and, as, you, can, hear, it, is, very, difficult, to, understand, what, you, are, reading, about, when, you, talk, in, single, words, like, this. You may even have forgotten what I was talking about already. This illustrates my point, that we think in ideas, not in words.
Basic comprehension skills are easy to learn. Once they are mastered, reading and comprehension speed will increase dramatically because, the faster you go, the easier reading becomes. This surprises many people because it seems counter-intuitive. However, the same thing happens when learning to ride a bicycle - as the novice learns the skills necessary to ride faster, it becomes much easier to maintain balance and direction. The same thing happens with reading, as your reading speed gets closer to the normal speed you think at, comprehension gets much easier.
