Pri·ma·ry·  e·du·ca·tion· , as  its  name  su·ggests· , pro·vides·  the  plat·form·  on  which  all  fu·ture·  lear·ning·  takes  place . So , just  as  a  house  with  poor  foun·da·tions·  will  re·qui·re·  on·go·ing·  main·te·nance·  and  re·pair· , chil·dren·  who ^ do ^ not  have  a  good  groun·ding·  in  ba·sic·  lear·ning·  stra·te·gies·  and  lan·guage·  skills  will  be  re·stric·ted·  in  what  they ^ can  a·chieve·  year  af·ter·  year , for  the  rest  of ^ their ^ lives .

The  most  co·mmon·  ad·vice·  gi·ven·  to  stru·ggling·  stu·dents·  is , "You ^ must  try  har·der· ." The  a·ssum·ption·  is  that , if  the  chil·dren·  just  put  in  a  bit  more  e·ffort· , they ^ will  be  a·ble·  to  o·ver·come· ^ the  pro·blems·  them·selves· . In  the  20 years  I've  been  in·volved·  in  pri·vate·  co·a·ching· , I  have  on·ly·  en·coun·tered·  a  few  chil·dren·  who ^ are  not  try·ing·  hard  e·nough· ^, and  so  could ^ be  con·si·dered·  la·zy· . The  o·ver·whel·ming·  ma·jo·ri·ty·  of ^ my  cli·ents·  were  try·ing·  far  har·der·  than  they ^ nee·ded·  to , un·til·  I  taught  them  more  e·ffi·cient·  lear·ning·  stra·te·gies·  that  is .
